Are you at greater risk for developing debilitating and expensive chronic diseases by trusting your medical care to mid-level providers?
- Increasingly, both primary medical care services and specialty medical care services are performed by mid-level providers.
- Mid-level providers do not have the training or expertise of physicians. Key aspects of your medical care may be put at risk, resulting in more discomfort, more medical visits, more tests, more lost time, and more expense for you and your family.
- North Carolina statutes require mid-level providers to have physician supervision, as do the NC Medical Board and the NC Board of Nursing... BUT ...
- The supervising physician does not have to be onsite
- The mandatory Collaborative Agreement or Supervisory Agreement are typically, very loosely defined using terminology such as:
- "... must establish minimum standards of consultation ..."
- "... must be appropriate to the skills of the supervising physician as well as the mid-level practitioner's level of competence ..."
- "... physician to provide the legally required supervision of the PA or NP ..."
- Ask yourself these reasonable questions:
- A) If a mid-level provider is required to have physician medical supervision (because they have less medical training), and the supervising physician is not onsite OR the supervising physician has a busy schedule of their own, how much effective medical supervision actually occurs?
- B) How much of your medical care is provided by lesser trained physician assistants or nurse practitioners?
- C) Based on your personal experience, have you received the professional time and experience, and quality medical supervision that you actually need for your medical care?
